C&J has specialized in litigation and trial advocacy for more than sixty years throughout Utah and surrounding states. We consider our founders, Ray R. Christensen and Jay E. Jensen, to be the gold standard for trial attorneys. With hundreds of civil trials to their credit, both achieved legendary careers and numerous honors, including Utah’s Distinguished Lawyer of the Year Award. They epitomize integrity, dignity, professionalism, and civility. C&J's present members follow in their footsteps. C&J represents both plaintiffs and defendants in most areas of civil litigation. While handling complicated matters for some of the largest corporations in the country, we also represent individuals and families who have been significantly harmed and are seeking to recover damages. This mixed practice allows C&J attorneys to understand cases from divergent perspectives, and the resulting broad experience provides insight and networks that benefit our clients. C&J's attorneys have successfully focused on diverse practice areas that cover most of the civil litigation spectrum, including appeals; commercial litigation; construction; government defense; insurance bad faith and coverage; mediation and arbitration; plaintiff personal injury; products liability; real estate, land use, and water law; tort defense; and transportation law.

C&J began life in April 1949, when Arthur Moreton, E. Ray Christensen, and Ray R. Christensen agreed over lunch at the historic Alta Club in Salt Lake City to form a partnership. Jay E. Jensen joined in 1958, and helped build the firm into a solid insurance defense and product liability practice. C&J continues that strong tradition of insurance defense and product liability work, but, as it has grown over the years it has developed a broader litigation practice, which includes a very successful personal injury practice, vigorous insurance bad faith and coverage work, and complex commercial litigation. Now, C&J successfully handles almost every type of litigation, regardless whether it represents plaintiffs bringing claims or defending clients against claims brought by others.

The cases C&J handles vary widely, from personal losses to large corporate matters. C&J has defended clients in major liability cases, including the United Airlines landing cases in Salt Lake City, the Texas Gulf sulphur potash mine explosion near Moab, the Sunshine Mine explosion in Idaho, and several mass tort claims (breast implants, Bendectin, and Fen-Phen, to name a few). The firm has defended many important product liability cases for major manufacturers, and, more recently, represented the plaintiffs in the litigation leading to the landmark insurance bad faith and punitive damages Supreme Court decision, "Campbell v. State Farm."

The lawyers at C&J strive to emulate the professionalism demonstrated by the firm's founders, and build upon their reputations for client service and competent representation. C&J counts among its lawyers former Utah State Bar presidents, several members of the American College of Trial Lawyers, as well as the recipients of various awards and recognitions. C&J's lawyers are involved in the legal community and the larger community, serving as members of many boards and committees.
